About Khardung La Pass

Khardung La (locally known as Khardung La Top) is a mountain pass in the Leh district of Ladakh. At an elevation of 5,359 meters (17,582 ft), it is one of the highest motorable passes in the world. The pass is the gateway to the Shyok and Nubra valleys.

The pass was built in 1976 and opened to public motor vehicles in 1988. It is maintained by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and serves as a crucial route for the Indian military to transport supplies to the Siachen Glacier.
